Braces Q & A

Besides metal braces, what are my options?

Traditional metal braces consist of brackets and wires that fit on and around your teeth to slowly move them into position. Today’s metal braces are smaller and less noticeable than they were in the past. Additionally, newer materials — like heat-activated archwires — help your teeth move more quickly and with much less pain than the previous decades of metal braces.

Ceramic braces are another option for straightening your teeth. They’re about the same size and shape as metal braces, but they’re clear or the same color as your teeth, so they’re much less noticeable than metal.

The team at Montrose Dental Group also offers Invisalign® clear aligners as an alternative to braces altogether. Invisalign aligners are custom-made, smooth, plastic trays that fit snugly over your teeth.

You can remove them to eat or brush, and they’re almost completely invisible. Invisalign is a great option for teens and adults who want to discreetly correct dental issues without the inconvenience of traditional braces.

What types of early orthodontic treatments are available for kids?

In some cases, your child may benefit from an early orthodontic intervention. “Interceptive orthodontics” as it’s called, may begin as early as age 6 or 7 as your child’s teeth and jaw are still developing. It’s common for your child’s small mouth to have a hard time accommodating new adult teeth as they come in.

In a situation like this, your experienced dentist at Montrose Dental Group may recommend an orthodontic appliance called a palatal expander. This device can expand your child’s upper dental arch to allow adult teeth to emerge into position with less crowding or other problems. Early treatment may shorten or simplify braces later on when all your child’s permanent teeth are in.

How do I choose between braces or Invisalign?

The dentists at Montrose Dental Group are highly experienced in both traditional braces and the Invisalign system, and they can help you decide which is best for you or your child’s orthodontic needs. After a comprehensive exam and evaluation, they discuss which types of braces are most effective for you or your children, so you can make an informed decision about how to proceed. Ultimately, the dental team wants to help you have straighter, healthier teeth, and they’re committed to supporting you with whichever orthodontic route you choose.
